Abstract
The kiosk market is growing rapidly, yet user experience and satisfaction remain relatively low. This is especially evident in Gangwon Province, South Korea, where the digital divide is significant, and a large proportion of the population consists of elderly and digitally marginalized individuals. To address this issue, this study targets two general hospitals in Gangwon Province to investigate the hardware and software interfaces of hospital kiosks. The purpose of this study is to propose a user-centered design guideline that improves the usability and accessibility of hospital kiosks. The research methods include a literature review, ergonomic analysis based on anthropometric data, hospital environment investigation, field observations, user interviews, and journey map analysis. Through this comprehensive approach, pain points in user experience were identified. The software presented challenges such as complex structures, ambiguous wording, and inefficient function placement, which caused confusion and delays for users. On the hardware side, problems were found in the layout, height, and angles of components, which failed to accommodate the physical diversity of users. Based on these findings, the study proposes design criteria for kiosk hardware and suggests stage-by-stage improvements for the software interface. A comprehensive design guideline based on user-centered principles is presented. This study serves as foundational research that can contribute to improving the usability of hospital kiosks and enhancing digital accessibility in underserved regions.
