Abstract
The purpose of this study is to categorize the perceptions of hats among college students in their 20s and analyze the characteristics of each perception type. The research method employed in this study is Q methodology. The perceptions of hats among college students were classified into four types. Type 1, the "Face-Covering & Hairstyle-Concealing Type," uses hats to cover the face and hair, often wearing them when they have not washed their hair. This type also perceives hat-wearing as a way to create a youthful image. Type 2, the "Fashion-Conscious & Makeup-Covering Type," considers hats an essential fashion item and frequently wears them, especially when not wearing makeup. Type 3, the "Practical & Design-Oriented Type," wears hats primarily for practical purposes, such as protection from heat or cold, and values design the most when purchasing hats. Type 4, the "Show-off & Brand-Oriented Type," wears hats for self-display purposes, prioritizing brand value when purchasing hats and feeling happiness from owning them. The implications for hat development for college students in their 20s are as follows. First, for Type 1, hats should be designed with a brim that effectively covers the face and a crown that fully encloses the head. Second, for Type 2, a variety of designs and colors should be provided to match different clothing styles. Additionally, the inner part of the brim could feature a red hue to enhance facial brightness when worn without makeup. Third, for Type 3, functional designs should incorporate seasonal materials to ensure protection against both heat and cold. Fourth, for Type 4, the development of exclusive, limited-edition designs should be considered to enhance rarity and exclusivity. Future research should expand to various age groups and include quantitative studies.
