Abstract
This study investigates the formation of modern Hangul movable types through 19th-century Christian literature and examines the impact of Western printing technology and religious factors on the development of Hangul typefaces. Through an analysis of eight representative Hangul literary works and their type characteristics, the study reveals that early modern movable types were produced and utilized by Christian missionaries to disseminate Hangul-only Bibles and catechisms. Representative examples include Types No. 2, 3, 4, and 5, which were produced abroad—particularly in China and Japan—and each exhibits unique formal characteristics. Type No. 2 was formalized based on the stable structure of Gungche, while No. 3, known as Seongseoche, followed the geometric features of the Hunminjeongeum Eonhaebon. Type No. 4, called Hanseongche, resembled No. 2 but displayed distinct structural features. Type No. 5, used in the French–Korean dictionary, was based on the characteristics of Gungche and named Choi Ji-hyeokche The origins of these types, developed alongside Western printing technology, can be categorized into two primary styles: traditional Gungche and Huneonche. Notably, their original copyists were lower-class Christians, in contrast to the upper-class dominance in late Joseon manuscript culture. Unlike traditional woodblock printing, these editions were produced exclusively in Hangul using Western techniques, primarily for Christian publications. Emerging in the 1880s amid rapid changes in East Asia, these movable types established a new typographic structure that departed from older Hangul type styles and influenced later developments. This study clarifies how the introduction of Western printing technology and Christian influences in the 19th century shaped the functional and social transformation of modern Hangul typeface styles, providing a foundational basis for future research on their classification and prototypes.
