Abstract
New middle aged adults are a heterogeneous late working-age group, yet existing evaluations rarely reflect their segmented characteristics by usage experience. We identified emotional experience factors and residential space types through a literature review and survey, then established hypotheses on the housing type–usage experience relationship and on differences in emotional experience factors by space type. The factor set was organized into higher- and lower-level dimensions, and residential spaces were defined as Entry-Controlled, Care-Oriented, and High-Risk Operation based on everyday use scenarios. Before testing, we examined the reliability and validity of the measurement instrument. Hypotheses were tested with cross-tabulation and independent-samples t-tests, and we analyzed the reasons for any observed differences. Housing type did not significantly affect whether users had experience with smart home security products. By contrast, across the three space types, experience levels differed by housing type, with single-family residents higher in all spaces. Remote Access was the only factor consistently differing across spaces, followed by Intrusion Deterrence, Alarm and Notification, Stability, Usefulness, and Interoperability. These patterns are explained by the distinct functional goals and control expectations of each space and housing context. The study provides a cross-perspective of housing type and space type for new middle-aged users and offers actionable criteria for planning and evaluating smart home security products. Design should prioritize Remote Access regardless of space and tailor the other factors to each space’s characteristics.
