Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the aesthetic process through which Nam June Paik’s glitch art forms cultural hybridity at the intersection of Eastern and Western thought systems. The subject of analysis is the media artwork Good Morning, Mr. Orwell (1984), inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, which transformed the Cold War’s surveillance discourse into a field of artistic communication by combining live satellite broadcasting with real-time video. The analysis employs the Prism Analysis Method, which integrates the four axes of Eastern philosophy (Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shamanism)with Charles S. Peirce’s semiotics and Homi K. Bhabha’s hybridity theory. Twelve sequences of the work were coded across three stages—meaning (What), structure (How), and function (Why)—and visual and auditory glitch cues (color transitions, split screens, feedback noise, etc.)were defined as codebook variables and documented by time code (Tables 6, 7, and 9). The analysis revealed that the glitch is not a simple technical error but functions as a mediating device that creates a “third space” through the intersection of Eastern and Western aesthetics. The average hybridity score was 8.3, with high hybridity (≥9)identified in Sequences 17 (11 points, around 00:37:10)and 20 (10 points). These scenes combined rapid color transitions, feedback loops, channel jitter, and acoustic noise, visualizing the emptiness and inaction central to Eastern philosophy. Medium hybridity (7–8)appeared in Sequences 7 and 16, where overlapping images, blended text and visuals, and rhythmic flashes created fluid shifts in meaning. Low hybridity (≤6)occurred in Sequences 9 and 15, where brief noise or color drift appeared, but the chain of meaning–structure–function was weak, limiting hybridity’s synergistic effect. These findings demonstrate that hybridity deepens when visual and auditory cues mediate structural transitions and are accompanied by reciprocity, boundary dissolution, and ritual at the functional level. This study redefines the glitch as an aesthetic and cultural passage linking Eastern and Western philosophies and presents an analytical framework that broadens the technological aesthetics of media art. It further acknowledges the formative potential of Eastern thought and suggests possible directions for deepening cultural pluralism in contemporary art discourse.
