Abstract

This study examines how sensory interaction is formed in interactive sound art, focusing on the physical structures of objects and the bodily actions of audiences. With the development of digital technology, interactive art has increasingly embraced audience participation and feedback as core components, while sound art has expanded toward exploring the material foundations and sculptural qualities of sound. Within this context, the study analyzes how responsiveness grounded in materiality and real-world sensory experience constructs more persuasive auditory experiences. To this end, it considers the trajectory of audience-centered art since the twentieth century, the ways in which materiality has been employed in sound art, and the design of interfaces and devices that guide sensory engagement. Five works from the exhibition Room for the Multisensory, curated and produced by the researcher, serve as practical case studies. These works integrate sensors, motors, piezo elements, and ceramics, demonstrating how gestures, touch, and spatial positioning by the audience are transformed into sound. The causal relationships between sound and the physical movement of objects are made explicit, and immersive experiences emerge as virtual sounds are coupled with material actions, linking hearing, sight, and touch in an organic manner. Observations from the exhibition revealed that explicit instructions and intuitive affordances encouraged audience participation and sensory involvement, showing that in interactive sound art, the integration of physical responsiveness and perceptual causality enhances the concreteness and persuasiveness of aesthetic experience.
