Abstract
This paper explores the potential of data art to reshape our understanding of the climate crisis, with a particular focus on the pressing issues of marine pollution and extinction of species, issues that often go beyond human perception. It argues that data art offers a means to contemplate the intricate relationships among humans, non-human species, and technological infrastructure within an ecotechnological environment. This paper discusses the critical use of data as an artistic medium and its impact by analyzing Territorial Agency's Oceans in Transformation (2017-2020) and Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg's Machine Auguries (2019-present). Oceans in Transformation uses open data to illustrate the impact of human activities on the oceans, allowing audiences to confront environmental shifts through data visualization. It emphasizes the accessibility and openness of the data while also exposing the excessive human interventions that are causing ecological disruptions in the marine environment. Machine Auguries creates a site-specific sonification of data and attempts to remind us of the loss of habitat for migratory birds and the extinction of bird species. It adapts a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to replicate a sound dataset of endangered birds that closely resembles the original, now-vanishing sounds. The sonification of the data creates an emotional connection between the viewer and the ongoing extinction, and highlights how the climate crisis is intertwined with technology, artifacts, and cultures. This paper proposes an inclusive future as an alternative to anthropocentric perspectives, arguing that the sensationalization of data can envision the coexistence of humans, non-human species, and technological infrastructure.
