Abstract

With the rapid advancement of smart vehicle technologies, augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) systems have become a core component in modern driver assistance systems. However, existing AR-HUD interface designs may inadvertently increase drivers' visual load and distract attention, thereby posing potential risks to driving safety. Therefore, investigating the influence of AR-HUD interface design on drivers’ visual attention is of critical importance for improving system interaction efficiency and overall road safety. This study aims to systematically analyze the mechanism through which AR-HUD interface elements affect drivers’ visual attention and, based on the findings, propose theoretical foundations and practical strategies for optimizing visual information layout. Initially, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to evaluate the individual effects of various design indicators-including icon position, size, transparency, and animation. Subsequently, a multivariate ordered probit model was applied to examine interactions among interface elements and provide a more comprehensive analysis. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between explicit importance (based on subjective responses) and implicit importance (based on model predictions) was performed to validate the effectiveness and applicability of implicit importance analysis. The results revealed that certain interface elements, although rated as less important by users, had a statistically significant impact on visual attention. This suggests that implicit evaluation methods can serve as a valuable complement to traditional survey-based approaches. Based on the IPA-Kano model, the study classified interface elements into four quadrants to determine prioritization for design improvement. Overlapping visual layers and excessive animation were identified as key distractors requiring immediate refinement, whereas elements with optimal contrast and spatial arrangement effectively enhanced visual focus and should be maintained as strengths. In summary, this research presents an integrated evaluation framework combining statistical modeling with cognitive-perceptual analysis, and provides clear, actionable directions for optimizing AR-HUD interface design. The findings contribute both theoretically and practically to the development of safer and more effective smart driving environments.
