Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the process of identity formation among designers through their participation in art book fairs and to analyze it using narrative inquiry from three perspectives: temporality, sociality, and place. While previous studies have mainly focused on art book fairs and designers’ social relationships, this study examines designers’ narratives throughout the process of participation and how their identities are formed. The research participants consisted of three designers who produced art books and participated in fairs. Using narrative inquiry, their experiences were analyzed in-depth within the contexts of temporality, sociality, and place. The analysis yielded the following findings. First, from the perspective of temporality, participation in art book fairs allowed designers to start book-making based on past design experiences and to reconstruct the meaning of their work through current fair participation. Second, regarding sociality, producing art books and participating in fairs involved interactions with fellow designers, visitors, and the market, which significantly influenced creative motivation and identity formation. Third, from the perspective of place, personal workspaces and fair venues functioned as sites of creation and interaction, serving as important environmental factors that shaped designers’ creative practices. Fourth, participation in fairs required continuous negotiation between artistic and commercial aspects, and the designers sought to maintain a balance to sustain their creative practices. Fifth, these findings suggest that narrative inquiry into designers’ experiences provides valuable implications for design studies, highlighting the need to understand designers’ work within the contexts of their personal lives and creative processes. Designers should be regarded as agents who construct their identities and sustain creative practices within social contexts, rather than simply as visual producers. Furthermore, accumulating case studies of designers working in various cultural contexts and creative environments could broaden design research to focus more on individual life and practice.
