Abstract

Robotic art, a field that merges robotics and art, offers new aesthetic experiences. This paper analyzes robotic art from the perspective of Alan Turing's Imitation Game, proposing a novel approach to re-evaluating the relationship between humans and robots, and the meaning of art. Unlike previous studies that primarily focused on technological implementation, this paper used the act of robotic 'imitation' as a theoretical framework to define the aesthetic characteristic of robotic art: 'mechanical liveliness'. Robotic art evokes 'mechanical liveliness', a unique sensation activated in the viewer when a non-living machine imitates organic movement. This differs from Turing's Imitation Game, which hides the machine's body to prove its ability to imitate, by actively showcasing the robot's physical form and movement. The paper argues that this mechanical liveliness manifests in various ways depending on the object of imitation (e.g., biological forms, movements), the method of imitation, and the historical context. It delves into the works of artists like U-Ram Choe, Team VOID, Byeongjun Kwon, and Jinah Roh to demonstrate how each work elicits a different kind of mechanical liveliness. Choe’s works, with their intricate technology, imitate the form and movement of living creatures, inspiring a sense of wonder as if encountering a new species. Team VOID, in contrast, uses only the movements of industrial robot arms to reenact human actions, sparking a sense of surprise. Kwon’s pieces, with their fragile and clumsy robotic figures, imitate human vulnerability, stimulating the viewer's empathy and pity. Finally, Roh's interactive works co-evolve with the audience, raising questions about emotional bonds and ethical issues between humans and machines. In conclusion, robotic art transcends simple technological demonstrations, serving as a mirror that reflects the essence of humanity through the machine’s act of imitation. As robots become more integrated into our daily lives, robotic art will continue to play a crucial role in expanding our relationship with robots and, in turn, posing new questions about human-to-human relationships.
