Abstract
This study investigates the effects of various firing conditions and material compositions on optimizing the metallic luster in copper-added luster glazes. It was found that luster glazes exhibit a distinctive copper-colored metallic sheen when copper nanoparticles form at low temperatures, a characteristic that contrasts with the typical red hues observed during high-temperature reduction firings. The findings reveal that firing temperature and reduction atmosphere are key factors in the formation of copper nanoparticles and the development of metallic luster. Specifically, low-temperature reduction firings were shown to enhance the copper-colored metallic sheen more effectively. The study also highlighted differences in glaze composition. Frit 3110-based glazes tended to show material separation, with copper carbonate settling, while Jesrite borate-based glazes exhibited more stable mixtures, although requiring a higher water ratio. As a result, a combination of Frit 3110 and Jesrite borate was deemed optimal for maximizing metallic luster. Additionally, the addition of bismuth was found to accelerate the formation of metallic sheen, suggesting its catalytic role in the nucleation and growth of copper nanoparticles. This behavior of bismuth mirrors that of lead, which is traditionally known to enhance metallic luster. The optimal reduction firing time was identified as one hour, which yielded the most desirable copper-colored metallic sheen. Moreover, bismuth presents a promising alternative to lead, offering both environmental benefits and superior performance in metallic luster formation. The conclusions drawn from this study underscore the importance of carefully controlled firing conditions and material selection in achieving consistent and high-quality metallic luster. This research contributes to the artistic and practical advancement of luster glazes, offering valuable insights for future applications and developments.
