Abstract
The history of glaze is as long as the history of ceramic but the general idea of glaze changes as time pass. The traditional ceramic was consistent with putting function first, however the modern ceramic is as abstruse as the modern arts. There won't be any more outmoded ceramic artists who are bounded to Zegel system or component composition system. True ceramic artists of this day are those who are able to develop unique ceramic glaze and use it on the formative beauty they seek. In this point of view, the intention of this research is to help both students majoring in ceramic and ceramic artists who have a lot of difficulties in glaze experiments by presenting the process of searching the color of glaze, helping them to find the glaze color they desire. Eventually this research will help to understand the basic concept of glaze compounding and suggest a method of applying it. For ceramic artists glaze is mostly essential. As time reached the present day, glaze made it possible to express various beauties of art. When glaze is put in to plasticity process it brings about unexpected changes and this is the reason why it's important for ceramic artists to be able to make their own unique glaze. In this point of view, this research concentrated on suggesting how to make glaze more easily and variously as artists intend by applying informations and verified data of already known glaze experiment. Glaze experiment consists of 5 steps from basic steps to improved steps. Step 1 : Searching characteristics of external appearance of basic glaze through experiment of binary mixture method of glaze compound. Step 2 : Experiment of adding Kaolin and Silica. (Search of stable limit of glaze) Step 3 : Experiment of adding Copper oxide 1% and establishing basic glaze. Step 4 : Experiment of single-colored glaze. (Copper Oxide, Iron Oxide Red, Cobalt Oxide, Chrome, manganese, Titanium, nickel) Step 5 : Experiment of color glaze and combination of 3 colored oxide. (Copper Oxide was fixed and was mixed with other colored oxides in 1:2, 1:2, 2:2, 2:2 proportions - 60 cases of color glaze experiment) The makings are as followed: The usual compound clay that is used in moulding was chosen, particularly white compound porcelain clay(Shin Sung) which was recently developed was chosen and purchased. It was forged on a wheel to create 6cm in diameter and 1.5cm in depth. It's base was planed, naturally dried, first baked and then soaked in glaze to be coated. After 30minutes of oxidization in 1250℃ electric kiln and it was naturally cooled. This research presents how to construct an experiment of finding the basic glaze by establishing the component formation ratio without calculating it with zegel method. The person who experiments can find intuition and understanding into eager, as a result could obtain color glaze with its beauty beyond words. Ceramic artists should be able to make their own glaze and develop technical ability to use it and be able to express the art works' color and texture freely. For those who thought glazing as a difficult job I hope this experiment would help many ceramic artists to get rid of fear of glaze experiment and be able to get closer to it.
