Abstract
This article aims to investigate the evolution of the service design operations with a case of 'Virgin Atlantic' which led to the successful airline service design. Airline service has peculiar features as intangibleness, unattainable stock, volatility, non-transferable ownership and immeasurable service quality. The current trend shown in the airline service can be summarized as rapid advance of the low cost carriers, e-Commerce system broadly distributed in the airline industry, highly skilled in-flight service, strategic partnerships between airlines and implementation of FFP(Frequent Flyer Program). However the airline company can raise its own differentiated brand value by identifying individual customer needs and by effectively and efficiently utilizing available resources to the maximum extent while offering customers to experience new and higher quality services. In addition, the culture of organization can be changed with full of service mind by promoting opportunities which relevant teams and employees in various levels can participate in the service design process. Hence customer-oriented strategies can be established through diverse research activities. Virgin Atlantic, which is known as the most innovative airline in the world with the first remote check-in system, individual TV set, in-flight cappuccino and other new services, was stepping toward the service design as the next transition subject. The case study finally shows the unique service design method and process of Virgin Atlantic and discusses the success factors like leadership, culture, and organization design to their service design.
