Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the perceived fit between a theater and performance commodity on performance evaluation. Design/methodology/approach: A 2(functional fit: high vs. low) * 2(image fit: high vs. low) * 2(consumer familiarity: high vs. low) between subject factorial design was used in this study. Participants of this study were college students(N=176, male: 54.9%, female: 49.1%, average age: 23) who were randomly assigned by conditions. Results/findings: Results/findings: The findings indicate that consumer evaluation for musical performance is more positive at an exclusive theater that is either functionally fitted or image fitted. Also, when consumers feel high familiarity for a performance commodity, performance evaluation is more affected compared to low familiarity. Research implications/limitations: This study suggests some implications in that it was the first attempt to show the perceived fit between a theater(multipurpose vs. exclusive) and a performance commodity. Further, it also shows the effect on the evaluation of a performance commodity, as well as demonstrate that performance commodity familiarity of consumers can control the effect. However, this study chose musicals - the only genre - as an experimental stimulant; thus, it is necessary to confirm that we can deduct the same results from different genres, such as plays, dances, and concerts. Future work/research: In a study of which psychological mechanism would be added in terms of the effect of the perceived fit between a theater and a performance commodity on performance evaluation, the theoretical levels of contribution will increase. Originality/value: This research finds the effect of the perceived fit between a theater and a performance commodity on performance evaluation.
