Abstract

In this research we examine the effect of visual presentation on brand evaluation. Particularly, we investigate whether and how the presentation of products using color versus black and white will affect consumer’s reliance on well-established brand stereotype in brand evaluation. In many product evaluation consumers rely both on brand stereotype one possesses prior to the evaluation or more specific and diagnostic product information provided on the spot (e.g., advertisement. We show that the degree to which consumer relies on brand stereotype versus specific product information depends on the color presentation of the product. Specifically, the product image in Black and White versus color will trigger an abstract construal mode, causing consumers rely heavily on abstract brand image (i.e., brand stereotype). On the contrary, when the product image is presented in colors it will promote a concrete construal mode, leading to heavier reliance on specific product information. We test these hypotheses through a lab study and we show results consistent with our hypothesis. Furthermore, the results reveal that that these effects are not attributed to different liking of, or attention toward the image.
