Abstract

Even though donations are socially a very important issue, donation-relevant researches are still insufficient. This study was intended to re-verify a relation between mood which shows mixed results in the existing researches and donation behavior. It examined which one of mood valence and mood variation (before donation ads mood – after donation ads mood) explained the donation behavior better. In addition, the study verified what was a psychological mechanism which indicates the mood variation’s effect on donation behavior, that is, whether the donation behavior was increased to reduce a negative mood(laundering effect) caused by sad public advertisement. In other word, the study verified the effect of mood variation (after donation ads mood– after donation decision mood) on donation intention. As a result of verifying through experiment, it was verified that there was no difference in the donation intention by mood valence, depending on positive mood and negative mood, and that the mood variation had the positive effect on the donation intention. Also, in this study, it was confirmed that the relationship between mood variation and donation intention was mediated by ‘laundering effect’ for reducing the negative mood resulting from donation ads which was proposed as psychological mechanism. As this study re-verified the relation between the mixed mood and donation behavior, in that it built the foundation to promote the donation-relevant research by suggesting the mood variation newly in the donation research field, this study is academically significant. Also, it is important for marketers to design the advertisement which can increase the mood valence, when designing the donation advertisement. Also, it has a practical significance of the research, in that understanding and utilizing people’s laundering effect with the mechanism of showing the donation behavior could increase consumers’ donation behavior.
