Abstract
This research investigates the differences in persuasive effect of charity advertising by examining the interaction among the facial expression of donation recipients, the temporal distance of donation, and the regulatory focus of advertising message. Results indicate that, first, donation intention is higher for the nearer future than distant when recipient expresses sadness, whereas donation intention does not differ for both temporal distances when recipient is happy. Second, in case of sad expression, donation intention is higher for prevention focus, but in case of happy expression, donation intention is higher for promotion focus. Last, for happy recipient, donation intention is higher for promotion purpose regardless of temporal distance. However, in the case of sad recipient, donation intention is higher for prevention only when the temporal distance is nearer. In conclusion, this research demonstrates charity advertising should consider not only the interaction between ad slogan and emotions elicited by recipient’s facial expression, but also the construal level of consumers.
