Abstract

Cyber-bullying in cyberspace is increasing as a serious issue recently. It is also a very serious antisocial behavior in that it involves considerable mental harm to the victim. In this regard, this study investigates the moderating role of personal perceived self-control and information search motivation on flaming intention. We adopted a scenario-based experiment. After exposed to one of 2 scenarios (bad reply vs. regular reply), participants were asked to answer questions to measure their flaming intention, and then perceived self-control and information search motivation. Out of 150 participants, 122 usable questionnaires were collected and analyzed. The findings of two experiments show that in case of consumers with low and high perceived control, the flaming intention is higher when there is a bad reply. However, in case of consumers with hedonic information search motivation, flaming intention is not different between bad reply and regular reply. On the other hand in case of consumers with utilitarian information search motivation, flaming intention is higher when the there is a bad reply in online website. This study is academically meaningful in presenting the differentail effects of personal traits (perceived self-control and information search motivation) on customer’s intention of flaming. Practically, this study can suggest some useful guidelines to restrain bad reply for online site managers and policy makers.
