Abstract
This study is designed based on questions about how applying the impression management concept to decisions for self and other would affect the outcome. If someone wants to convey a positive social impression to others and adjust his/her behavior, this could affect the outcome of purchasing decision for others. This paper analyzes how impression management and self- other decision making affects the consumer's information searching behavior and investigates how self-control affects here. This study focuses on the information search process and concretely measures the amount of information search and the time of purchase decision. In this study, the effects of impression management, self-control, and self-other decision making on information search process has been examined. The results show the main effect of impression management, self-control, and decision objects and the interaction effect of impression management and decision object on the amount of information search. For the time of purchase decision, all the main effects are significant and the level of self-control and decision object, as well as impression management and decision object, turned out to have an interaction effect on the time of purchase decision. A three-way interaction effect of impression management, self-control, and decision object is also only significant on the time of purchase decision. This study has academic significance as it introduces an impression management scale fit for Korean circumstances and contributes to the research of impression management. The results of this study provide strategic guidelines for applying impression management in marketing and advertising.
