Abstract

This study investigated the interaction effects between identified victim (individual vs. group) and donation types (time vs. money) on donation behavior, and examined mediated moderating effects of guilt. The identifiable victim effect demonstrated that, in the domain of charitable giving, identified victim elicits more contributions than unidentified victims. Also, the level of abstraction of donation type affects target’s identifiability differently. Generally time is construed abstractly, whereas money is construed concretely. The main results of this study are as follows. First, when donating money which is concrete, identified single victim is higher donation behavior than the unidentified victim. Second, when donating time which is abstract, unidentified victim is higher donation behavior than the identified victim but there was no significant effect statistically. Third, a series of regression analyses were conducted to test the mediated moderating effects of emotional variable. And the results reveal that guilt partially mediated moderating effects of donation type to the donation intention and message effectiveness.
