초록
This study explores indirect speech acts and implied meanings in English movies. This paper utilizes part of the examples which Korean university students in Pragmatics class have analyzed, after studying speech act theory and implicature. This paper first briefly introduces the speech act theory, and examines types of the illocutionary speech acts and indirect speech acts in English movies. After briefly discussing the concept of implicature, this paper investigates the Cooperative Principles with a focus on the conversational maxims, and the implied meanings in English movies. This study confirms that teaching pragmatics including the speech act theory and implicature promotes Korean university students’ comprehension of indirect speech acts and implied meanings, and advance their pragmatic as well as communicative competence.
