초록

English articles have been widely researched in L2 acquisition studies, and most studies focused on article uses in expressing definiteness and specificity (Ionin et al. 2004, Snape & Yusa 2013, among many others). In contrast, generic uses of English articles have received relatively less attention. The current paper investigates L2 acquisition of English generic articles by Korean adult learners, and more specifically it examines role of different quality of input, by comparing two groups of learners who have been exposed to prolonged naturalistic input and who have not been exposed to such input. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the naturalistic input is advantageous in the L2 acquisition of generic use of English articles. The results of the current research reveal that naturalistic input is advantageous for adult L2 learners, at least in the acquisition of English generic articles. Furthermore, this result, in turn, implicates that classroom input should include sufficient evidence of generic use of English articles that are similar to the input which can be found in the naturalistic environment, in order to facilitate acquisition of such property.
