초록

This study investigates how Korean students perceive English on-glides in the sequences of [kwi]-[ki], [kwe]-[ke], [kwo]-[ko], [yi]-[i], [wu]-[u], and [wɔ]-[ɔ] by conducting a discrimination task. 32 Korean students (16 students with a high level of English proficiency and 16 students with a low level of English proficiency) and 3 native speakers of English, as a control group, participated in the task. The subjects heard 120 pairs of words, half of which consisted of the words with on-glides and the others without them. They were asked to determine whether each pair of words was the same or different. The major finding is that Korean participants, especially the lower-level group, showed poorer performance in [yi]-[i], [wu]-[u], and [kwo]-[ko] contrasts. It might be attributed to the fact that these contrasts carry the weaker acoustic cue because they have almost the same articulatory positions, in comparison with the relatively salient acoustic cue of the other sequences.
