초록

Motivated by the fact that Korean does not have off-gliding diphthongs, this paper investigates how Korean students perceive and produce English incomplete off-gliding diphthongs [ey] and [ow] by conducting an experiment. The results of this study demonstrate two asymmetries. First, the participants’ performance of the word group [ow] was significantly worse than the performance of the word group [ey] for both perception and production. Second, the participants’ perception of [ow] was significantly worse than the production of [ow] even after training. The persistent misperception of [ow] was accounted for by the weak acoustic cue that [ow] carries especially for the latter half part, in comparison with the salient acoustic cue of [ey]. The most predominant error involved both in perception and production of [ow] is deleting the latter part of [ow], thus reducing the vowel quality. Finally, some residual problems in understanding the relationship between perception and production were discussed.
