초록

This study explores how linguistic relativity of a language affects the cognition of its speakers. The findings show compelling evidence supporting linguistic relativity. The way that native Koreans perceive objects was found to be different from that of native English speakers. The factors affecting the extent of linguistic relativity are the test type and the language exposure in the target culture. The linguistic test seems to trigger the path between the language and the cognition more directly than the non-linguistic test where the cognitive activity may bypass any linguistic encoding. The effect of English proficiency did not reach the statistical significance; however, the cultural exposure revealed a positive effect on linguistic relativity.
