관련성 이론에 의한 ‘Will’과 ‘Be going to’의 화용적 의미 분석: 핵심 의미와 화자 의미의 차이를 중심으로

인간의 의사소통은 언어라는 기호를 통해서 이루어지지만 부호화된 문장의 의미는 실제 화자가 청자에게 전달하고자 하는 명제를 불분명하게 남겨놓는 경우가 많다. 모호성과 중의성 그리고 화자의 실제 의도 등은 의사소통을 저해하는 요소들이다. 이를 해결하기 위해, 우리는 의사소통과정에서 언어적 부호의 해석뿐만 아니라 언외 외적인 분석도 자연스럽게 하게 된다. 그렇다면, 이러한 언어 외적인 분석은 어떻게 발생하는가? 이 과정은 실제 세계의 지식을 바탕으로 문맥이나 추론과 같은 화용론적인 요소들이 개입하게 된다. 본 논문은 언어 외적인 화자 의미(speaker-meaing) 파악 과정을 영향력 있는 화용론 이론들 중의 하나인 Sperber & Wilson의 관련성 이론(relevance theory)를 통해서 살펴본다. 이 의미 추론 과정은 대표적 미래 표현인 will과 be going to의 쓰임을 비교분석함으로써 밝혀질 것이다. Will과 be going to는 미래 시간을 표현한다는 공통점을 가지며 교차사용이 가능하지만 때로는 분명히 구별해서 사용한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 의사소통과정에서 자연스럽게 발생하는 이 쓰임의 구분은 인간의 인지 시스템이 관련성을 최대화하려는 방식으로 작동하는 과정에서 발생하며, 이는 현재 상황에서 가장 자연스러운 함축과 추론 과정을 통해 적절한 의사소틍을 가능케하는 것이다. 서론 이후에 2장에서는 Will과 Be going to의 선행연구와 관련성 이론의 작용 원리를 이론적 배경으로 제공할 것이며, 이후 3장에서는 위 두 미래 표현이 사용된 문장과 맥락을 소개하고 관련성 이론을 통한 화용적 의미 분석 과정을 통해 두 미래 표현의 핵심 의미와 화자 의미의 차이를 설명할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper suggests that the speaker meaning inference process that occurs during the communication process between the speaker and the listener is explained using Sperber & Wilson's relevance theory, one of the influential pragmatic theories. This process is revealed by examining the context that includes the representative future expressions will and be going to. In order to properly explain this process, this paper examines previous studies on the subject of future expressions in English, comparative analysis of the meanings of will and be going to, and the basic working principle of the theory of relevance. Finally, through the theory of relevance, by analyzing the context in which these two expressions are used, we will suggest the core and speaker meanings of will and be going to through the natural cognitive process of humans that enables appropriate communication.
