Abstract
Kim Sa-jin (金思鎭) expressed his academic views and opinions on the unstable political situation of his time through letters exchanged with contemporary Confucian intellectuals. His letters reveal an honest portrayal of life and provide advice on personal conduct. The letters of Kim Sa-jin constitute the largest portion of Seoju Munjip (西洲文集) in terms of a single literary style. Volumes 3–7 of the collection include 115 letters sent to 82 recipients, including separate sheets. This study organizes information about the recipients, focusing on those who exchanged many letters with Kim Sa-jin, and classifies them (e.g., individuals in the same field of study, teachers, and students). Personal relationships and specific issues reflected in the letters are also examined. Kim Sa-jin sent 12 letters to Kim Hwang, who was a student of the same teacher. The responses to Kim Hwang’s inquiries cover various topics, including the biography and inscriptions of the deceased teacher, the publication of literary collections, academic content and quality, independence movements, and the political situation. Kim Sa-jin conveyed to his teacher, Lee Byeong-ho, the importance of studying and self-cultivation, lessons he realized through experience. In a letter to Kwak Jong-seok, he sought to comfort his teacher by emphasizing the students' will to inherit the teachings of Confucianism during tumultuous times. When asked by Lee Ga-won to review his writing, Kim Sa-jin responded that his prose was well-structured and concise and required no further editing. He also reminded Lee Ga-won to reflect on a poem he had composed while residing in Gimcheon. In a second letter to Lee Ga-won, Kim Sa-jin discussed the requested inscription and lamented the chaotic political situation of the time, as well as the decline of ethics and scholarship in Korea. This study, which examines Kim Sa-jin’s acquaintances and organizes the personal information of Confucian intellectuals of the time based on the letters, is expected to provide insights into the relationships and interactions of Confucian intellectuals during the Japanese colonial period.
