Abstract

Dohak poetry refers to the classical Chinese poetry created by the Neo-Confucian scholars of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties based on Neo-Confucian thought after its introduction to Korea. Although the literary creations of these Neo-Confucian scholars received insufficient attention due to the Neo-Confucian tradition of emphasizing Do and neglecting literature, Dohak poetry research has gradually emerged since the 1980s, providing a new perspective for exploring the interactive relationship between literary practice and Neo-Confucian concepts. The current focus of Daoist poetry research in Korean academia comprises conceptual definitions, ideological content, artistic features, and the relationship with Chinese Neo-Confucian poetry. Discussions in conceptual definition research mainly revolve around terms such as Dohak poetry, Lianluo-style poetry, and Seolli poetry. In ideological content research, the key discourses include the Neo-Confucian thought Dohak poetry conveys, the connection between Neo-Confucian thought and subjective practice, and interaction between Neo-Confucian thought and objective environments. Artistic feature studies focus on micro-level characteristics such as imagery, poetic language, allusions, and expressive techniques including Fu, Bi, and Xing, as well as macro-level aspects including the overall style and aesthetic orientation of Dohak poetry. Research on the relationship between Korean Dohak and Chinese Neo-Confucian poetry concentrates on the connection between Dohak poetry and the poems of Shao Yong, Zhu Xi, and the Lianluofengya. Chinese academia has paid little attention to Korean Dohak poetry. Most previous research addresses Korean Dohak poetry only briefly as a component of analyzing the overseas influence of Chinese Neo-Confucian poetry. Nevertheless, these studies have a complementary relationship with related Korean academic research achievements. Future research could build upon Chinese and Korean scholarly findings to adopt a more comprehensive approach that incorporates both synchronic and diachronic perspectives.
