Abstract

This paper is written with the aim of examining the status and characteristics of the ferries in Yangpyeong region, based on the village records of Yangpyeong compiled during the Joseon Dynasty. Upon thorough analysis of the information about the ferries of Yangpyeong area, two distinctive features are observed. Firstly, the presence of Yongjindo龍津渡 is consistently highlighted in all village records, underscoring its military significance. This underscores the recognition of Yongjindo as a pivotal ferry and strategic military point in Yangpyeong region. In the early years of the Joseon Dynasty, Yongjindo served as a crucial crossing point over the Bukhangang River when the king journeyed to the eastern Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province for military training, thus holding a significant role as a 'Royal Passage.' Conversely, during the Imjin War, Yongjindo gained prominence as a military strategic focal point for defending the eastern part of Gyeonggi Province. Ryu Seong-ryong aimed to establish a defense system connecting neighboring areas through Yongjindo, contributing significantly to stabilizing the eastern Gyeonggi region. Moreover, the Joseon government consistently implemented measures such as constructing earthen fortifications, installing Yongjinjin龍津陣, and overseeing Yongjindo under the Hunryeon-dogam to fortify its defense system. Secondly, the information related to the ferries in the village records of Yangpyeong compiled after the 18th century is much more abundant compared to those from the early Joseon period. This is attributed to the heightened economic functions of the ferries, particularly in water transportation and distribution, as witnessed in the later years of the Joseon Dynasty. Economically speaking, the pivotal ferry in Yangpyeong was Galsanjin葛山津. Serving as the starting point for water transporting, Galsanjin played a crucial role in transporting tax grains collected in Yanggeun region to Hanyang. And after mid-19th century, Galsanjin also operated as a commercial port in conjunction with Galsanjang葛山場, the town market of Yanggeun, highlighting its central role in economic activities in Yangpyeong during the late Joseon period.
