Abstract
This study examines the practical aspects of traveling along the Uiju-ro(義州路), a primary transportation route of the Joseon Dynasty, through an analysis of Yeonhaengnok(燕行錄) -records of missions to Beijing. While geographical records like Dorogo and Daedongjiji and old maps provide data on road networks, they offer limited insight into actual usage. To address this, this study analyzed 21 types of Yeonhaengnok from the 18th to 19th centuries, which serve as highly credible official reports. The analysis reveals three distinct characteristics of Uiju-ro travel. First, mission members exhibited flexibility, often visiting additional sites, such as familial burial grounds, for private reasons. Second, Yeonhaengnok captured real-time geographical changes—such as the relocation of the eupchi(邑治) in Geumcheon-gun—which were often outdated in static geographical records due to transcription delays. Third, significant discrepancies in route usage and spatial perception were identified in the northern Pyeongan-do section based on detailed stopovers. In conclusion, Yeonhaengnok possesses exceptional historical value for reconstructing the empirical conditions of transportation and the spatial perceptions of the period. It plays a crucial complementary role to old maps and geographical records by filling informational gaps. These findings provide a foundation for the future spatial restoration of the Uiju-ro and suggest potential for expanded research into military and commercial mobility during the Joseon period.
