Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine Calvin's theological views on persecution through his interpretation of the Book of Daniel within the context of the Genevan and French Reformed Churches in the 1550s, and to articulate the implications for the Korean Church today. Calvin published his commentary on Daniel late in his life, dedicating it to the devout Reformed Church members in his homeland, France. Building on this, the study will first briefly summarize the historical circumstances of the French Reformed Church in the 1550s, a period corresponding to the end of Calvin's life, and then explore the correlation between the French Reformed Church and Calvin's interpretation of Daniel. Then, this study adopts two research methodologies. First, it will extract and analyze passages from Calvin's commentary on Daniel that shed light on his views regarding persecution. The Book of Daniel is divided into two parts: the first deals with Daniel's life as an exile in a foreign land, and the second comprises Daniel's prophecies about future events. This study will select four sections from the former part and four from the latter, examining them subsequently. Next, based on the results of this analysis, we will explore two ways to apply Calvin's views on persecution to the Korean Church. First, we will consider the lessons for North Korean defectors living as migrants within the Korean Church. Second, we will present the responsibilities and roles of the Korean Church in embracing defectors as one body. In conclusion, this study applies Calvin's interpretation of the Book of Daniel — an analysis of God's Word that transcends time — to offer insights into how not only North Korean defectors but also Korean Church members can overcome the conflicts and problems they face.
