Abstract
This essay reflects on the literary function of the Song of the Sea(Ex. 15:1b-18, 21) and its meaning according to its literary function. For this, it studies on the origin of the text, suggesting that it is natural to identify the Song of the Sea as a compilation inserted into the present place(Ex. 15) in the Book of Exodus by the redactor(redactors) after 700BC at the least, or in the exilic period, or by P redactor in the post-exilic period. It examines how Ex. 1-14 and the Song of the Sea are linked in the close relationship produced by one theme ‘od's Sovereignty of the Salvation History.’From this, it attempts to clarify the redactor(s)'s intention in inserting ‘he Song of the Sea’into the present place in the Book of Exodus. The purpose of the redactor(s)'s compilation is to conclude the Exodus events through its literary function as a conclusion of the long history of God's salvation started from Genesis. From the result, this essay posits that ‘he Song of the Sea’should not be understood as a parenthesis purporting to recapitulate the Exodus events, nor as a mere transition to the Wilderness Wanderings, but as a significant literary unit in the Book of Exodus, that is, a conclusion of the Exodus events recounted in Ex. 1-14. Finally, the present essay attempts to identify a new meaning of the literary unit according to its literary function. The meaning of the Song of the Sea is identified as establishing the theological principle of interpretation of the Book of Exodus including the Exodus events and Wilderness Wanderings, and as delivering the theological message that the fulfillment of salvation depends upon God's sovereignty of salvation history.
