어거스틴의 관계적 유비로서의 ‘하나님의 형상’ (Image of God) 개념과 기독교윤리

기독교신학에서 ‘하나님의 형상’에 관한 해석은 인간론을 이해하는데 근거를 제공하기 때문에 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다. ‘하나님의 형상’을 관계론적 유비(relative analogy)가 아닌 존재론적인 유비(ontological analogy)로 해석할 때 인간 존재가 주체성과 독립성을 확보하고 이성과 행위에 있어서 완전을 지향하여 나갈 수 있다는 긍정적인 면도 있지만, 자칫 유한한 인간이 하나님과 존재론적으로 유비할 수 있다고 생각하는 순간, 오히려 피조 세계를 포함한 여타의 존재들에 대하여 배타적이고 독점적이며, 그리고 인간과 신을 동형시하여 군주적이고 제왕적이 되는 부정적인 문제점들을야기할 수 있다. 따라서 사지가 멀쩡한 사람들(?)이 하나님의 형상에 의한 기준이 되어, 장애인들에 대한 편견과 증오심이 유발될 수밖에 없으며, 하나님이 남성성을 가졌다고 해석되면 여성은 고스란히 남성 다음에 위치하는 이류 존재로 전락하게 된다. 이또한 하나님과 인간에 대한 존재론적인 유비가 일으킨 해석에 기인한 것이기도 하다. 필자는 기독교신학에 있어서 ‘하나님의 형상’에 대한 고전 신학에 관심을 가지고어거스틴의 관점을 분석하여 그의 놀라운 신학적 통찰력을 발견하게 되는데, 어거스틴은 ‘하나님의 형상’을 결코 인간과 비교할 수 있는 존재론적인 유비로 사용하지 않았으며, 또한 남성과 여성에 대한 피조성에 있어서도 ‘하나님의 형상’ 개념을 적용하지않았다는 점이다. 어거스틴은 형상이론을 관계론적 유비의 맥락에서 철저하게 ‘속사람’ (inner man)의 변화를 모색하며 하나님의 은총에 의한 ‘영적 존재’론을 펼치고 있음을보게 된다. 아울러 ‘하나님의 형상’을 회복한 전인적인 공동체적 이상을 구현하는 데까지나아가는 것을 보게 된다. 이와 같은 어거스틴의 사상은 ‘하나님의 형상’ 개념에 대한바람직한 신학적 단상을 제공하여 준다고 본다.
Abstract
‘image of God’ same as man’s appearance incurred prejudice and hatred against the handicapped and even made them the victims of ethnic genocide. Furthermore it restricted the woman to the supplementary role of man’s existence. This stems from the interpretation caused by the ontological analogy of God and man. The author, with the interest in the classical theology regarding the image of God in the field of Christian theology, will try to analyze the interpretation made by Augustine. The amazing theological insight which we can discover from Augustine is that the ‘image of God’ was not used as the ontological analogy in comparison to human beings, and also, that the concept of God’s image was not applied to the creatureliness of man and woman. Although Augustine seldomly interpreted the ‘image of God’ from the eco-theological perspective, when we observe he nonetheless stressed in his theology of resurrection that when humans are revived into new bodies and the material used is soil, we can realize that the eco-theological insight which values the ecosystem which humans live in is also provided.
