The history of anthropological interpretations of biblical texts is not long enough. Anthropologists have pointed out that the biblical literature was not a historical fact and biblical scholars have been concerned of the repercussions of anthropological approaches. However, a group of British social anthropologists argued that their anthropological perspective could shed a new light on biblical studies apart from the semiotic research in the first half of twentieth century. Mary Douglas also attempted to understand the Mosaic dietary laws of Leviticus 11 in relation to her ethnographic research. Her interpretation of the dietary laws faced a harsh criticism from scholars and later her understanding was revisited. This article aims to understand the way in which anthropology can contribute to biblical studies by exploring Douglas's analysis on the dietary laws of Leviticus 11. And I try to find the way in which her early theory of purity is developed in order to find the anthropological value in biblical studies.
