도시화 과정 속 교회생활을 통한 여성의 지위와 역할 개선 : 60-70년대 서울로 이주한 여성노인들을 중심으로

한국 개신교의 급속한 성장은 한국의 근대화, 산업화, 도시화 과정과 함께 이루어졌다. 특별히 1960년대부터 시작된 본격적인 도시화 과정 동안에 급격히 성장하였다. 그동안의 연구들은 한국 개신교 구성원의 55%를 차지하는 여성의 기여와 역할을 간과하였다. 본 연구는 이 현상에 대한 주요 원인이 향촌으로부터 서울로 이주한 여성들이 거주지 근거리에 위치한 소형교회에 출석하면서 향촌 공동체와 유사한 교회 공동체를 형성한 후 교회생활을 통해 여성으로서의 역할과 지위를 주체적으로 개선할 수 있었고 그로 인해 주변 여성 동료들과 자신의 가족들을 교회생활로 주도적으로 이끌 수 있었기 때문으로 본다. 이러한 관점으로 본 연구는 여성들의 경험과 소리를 파악하기 위해 인류학적 현지조사 방법론으로 구성한 구술 생애사를 통해 여성들의 교회생활을 분석하였다. 한국에서 이루어진 급속한 도시화는 여성들로 하여금 향촌의 한국 전통적 가부장제와는 분리된 시간과 공간을 갖게 하였고 여성들은 그 시간과 공간에서 교회생활을 하며 자신들의 지위와 역할들을 개선해 갔다. 여성들이 교회생활을 통해 가부장제의 가족으로부터 독립된 생활세계를 구축한 후, 서서히 시댁으로부터 독립된 가정을 형성하며 더 나아가 자신이 주도하는 가정으로 변화시켜 나아가는 과정을 본 연구를 통해 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
The Protestant churches in South Korea have rapidly developed with the process of Modernization, Industrialization, and Urbanization. Especially they have rapidly grown with the extensively Urbanization since 1960s. This study views that the main cause of this phenomenon is the women who has migrated from rural to Seoul, started to attend small churches nearby their houses, improved their status and role as women through the church life, and then brought their women peer and family to churches. According to this view, this study analyses the church life of the women by oral life history composed through the methodology of anthropologic field work to grasp the experience and voice of women. The rapid urbanization in South Korea made the women have the time and space separated from the Korean traditional patriarchy in the rural village, the women have improved their role and states in the time and space through the church life. They have built the independent lifeworld from the patriarchal families through the church life, composed the independent families from in-laws, and transformed it to the families which they are leading. This study researches the process of it.
