Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define the meaning of the aging experience of Christian low-income older women within the Korean social-cultural context, to understand their experiences and to explore how these aging experiences are shaped in social-cultural context. Its basic aim is to suggest pastoral care as a help for older women living alone in a church community so they can overcome social prejudices and become agents of their own healthy aging. Participants in this study were 10 Christian low-income older women living alone, between the ages of 74 to 86. To collect data for this study, in-depth interviews and participant observations were used. A phenomenological methodology of Colaizzi was used for data analysis. As a result, the researchers identified 34 themes, clustered into 11 categories, and then reduced to 5 categories: perception of aging, poor reality, religious life, living sound, and cultural stereotype of aging. This study found that sociocultural conditions along with gender and class had an effect on the aging experiences of Christian low-income older women living alone. However, within the poor conditions of their lives, they showed the generativity to help others more needy than they. This suggests a need to change the stereotype that older women are passive and dependent. This study can contribute an increase in the Korean church’s attention to the isolated lives of Christian low-income older women living alone.
