Abstract
This article aims to investigate the problem of criteria for religious beliefs, focusing on the debate between Nielsen and Phillips over Wittgensteinian Fideism. Nielsen, who first coined the term “Wittgensteinian Fideism,” criticizes Wittgenstein’s followers who, in his view, understand religion as an isolated, self-sufficient “language-game,” with its own criteria of rationality, placed outside the reach of any possible criticism. Responding to such a criticism, D. Z. Phillips, who has been, perhaps mistakenly, condemned as “the most prominent” Wittgensteinian fideist, claims that religious beliefs are distinctive language-games. However, he emphasizes, this does not mean that religious beliefs are isolated from features of human life outside religion. By examining Phillips’ use of the term “religious beliefs” in two senses, the author seeks to find a way to hold the distinctiveness of religious beliefs, avoiding the accusation of “Wittgensteinian fideism.”
