Abstract
This article explores the problem of religious language and Wittgenstein’s philosophy, focusing on the question, “What color is God’s eyebrow?” The problem of religious language, God-talk in particular, arises from the difficulty in using the finite human language to say something about the infinite God. The logical positivists insist that religious language is meaningless, since it can be neither verified nor falsified. Wittgenstein, in his early philosophy, also argues that religious language is meaningless and that what we cannot speak about, like religion, we must pass over in silence. Although his early thought looks similar to that of the logical positivists at first glance, his intention is not to downgrade the importance of religion but rather to show its significance. Unlike the picture theory in his early thought, his later philosophy, which stresses the diverse use of language and the contextuality of meaning, shows us that religious language can be meaningful. He also invites us to pay careful attention to the context of the use of religious language, in order to grasp its meaning. According to Wittgenstein’s “Lectures on Religious Belief,” when we pay heed to the context of its use, we find that religious language has its own rationality which is different from that of science; that, unlike scientific language, it is neither hypothetical nor probable but absolute; that it is pictorial language which regulates a believer’s whole life. I hope that this article can be a step toward a richer discussion of the problem of religious language in Korean theology.
