이 논문은 1882년부터 1923년까지 만주지역에서 활동한 스코틀랜드 출신의 의료선교사 두걸드 크리스티의 선교사상을 그가 저술한 문헌과 실천을 통하여 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 분석 대상은 그가 1907년에 <중국백주년선교대회>에서 의료선교위원장으로서 제출한 발제문 “의료선교”와 그 후속 토론, 1907년에 행한 “중국의료선교협회 회장 크리스티 박사의 이임사,” 1909년에 동 협회 학술지에 기고한 “심양에서의 의료교육,” 그리고 1913년의 발표문 “의료교육 사역에서 중국인과의 협력”이 주요한 분석대상이다. 그는 기본적으로 의료선교가 개척자와 복음전도자의 역할을 하며 기독교적 사랑의 실물교훈이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 또한, 온전한 계시와 복음을 확보하는 교회의 필수적인 사역이라고 주장하였다. 생애 후기에, 그는 중국에서 선교사들은 병원과 의과대학을 중국인에게 넘겨주고 떠날 것을 강조하였으며, 궁극적으로 의료선교는 지역의 공공의료를 위한 기독교회의 봉사임을 주장하였다. 기독교 선교, 성서학, 그리고 의료 체계를 아우르는 크리스티의 선교사상은 현대의 기독교 선교를 위하여 견고한 이론적 기초를 제공함과 동시에 현실적이고 도전적인 과제를 던져준다.
Abstract
This paper aims to understand the missionary thought of Dr. Dougal Christie, a Scottish medical missionary who worked in Manchuria from 1882 to 1923, through the literature he wrote and his practice. The literature which this article investigatges are as follows: the essay “Medical Mission” submitted to the <China Centennial Missionary Conference> and its follow-up discussion; “Address delivered by the Retiring President, Dr. Christie, at the Triennial Meeting, 1907,” in relation to the China Medical Missionary Association; “Medical Education in Moukden”; “Co-operation with the Chinese in Medical Educational Work(1913). He believed that medical missions shall be a pioneer agency, an evangelistic agency, and an object lesson of Christian love. In addition, he identified them as an essential ministry of the church that ensures the whole revelation and whole gospel. In his later years, he emphasized that missionaries in China should hand over hospitals and medical schools to the Chinese and that medical missions are ultimately a Christian church's service to local public health. Christie's missionary ideas, which span Christian missions, biblical studies, and the medical system, provide a solid theoretical basis for modern Christian missions while presenting practical and challenging tasks.
