Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship of two oppositional groups (the Roman empire and Judaism) in the context of the Matthean community which confessed Jesus the Messiah as the “Son of David”. The Gospel according to Matthew, the first gospel in the New Testament, is a dialectic book explaining how the Messianism of the Old Testament is finally accomplished in Jesus Christ of the New Testament. In about 70 A.D. and in the collapse of Jerusalem, Matthew tried to consolidate the self-identity of “Jesus is the predicted Christ” for the Matthean community with Roman empire and Jewish power. The core of the preface (Chapter 1 and 2) of the gospel of Matthew relies on a motif of the “Son of David”. Unlike other gospels, the first gospel makes it clear that the father of Jesus was Joseph(1:20), the “Son of David”, and the birthplace of Jesus was also Bethlehem(2:5), the “village of David”. In addition “the king David” played a central role (1:1, 6, 17) in the genealogy of Jesus. If so, why does the writer of the first gospel describe Jesus as the Messiah, the “Son of David”? It is because Jesus needed to be reemphasized as the figure continuing the genealogy of David who tradition held was the greatest King and the true type of the Messiah, someone who would recover the glory of Israel. However, it is assumed that there would be a sharp conflict between two incompatible groups as confirmed in the texts (2:1-12); one is the Magi (2:1-2, 9-12) which accepts the birth of Jesus as the Son of David and the other is Herod the Great, Rome and Jewish leaders (2:3-8) who reject this claim. In the preface this tension is expressed and Matthew exposes the response of the Matthean community to God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.
