Abstract

This study deals with the religious and theological understanding of the DMZ, which has often been recognized as a result of the division system of the Korean Peninsula. Through this, this paper examines the validity and possibility of the DMZ and seeks the possibility of overcoming the division system and forming a new peace system. First, this paper examines Son Ho-cheol and Park Young-gyun’s critical perception of Baek Nak-cheong’s division system theory. On the one hand, through a critical debate with Baek Nak-cheong’s division system theory, this paper sheds light on Son Ho-cheol’s realistic position that argues that North and South Korea should be viewed not as a division system but as a structure already divided by the DMZ, and Park Young-gyun’s psychological understanding that attempts to reexamine the dynamic relationship between North and South Korea under the image of the division system as a ‘defective state.’ Based on this, this paper shows the realistic relationship between North and South Korea that can no longer be understood under a single state system. Second, Baek Nak-cheong’s division theory shows that North and South Korea do not recognize their fundamental relationship and constantly view the division issue from the perspective of vested interests, and within that, the DMZ has been distorted into an ‘armed zone’ that cannot escape from this division system. As a result, this paper presents the significance of Baek Nak-cheong’s division theory in looking at the DMZ issue in practice today. This is because Baek Nak-cheong specifically presents the path to transformation between North and South Korea that must be pursued in the midst of the imperfection of the system that North and South Korea belong to together, not the Cold War system, and the hostile relationship between the two Koreas that is led and maintained by the ruling class within it. Third, this paper examines the current and historical significance of division in relation to the ‘two-state theory’ that has recently surrounded the Korean Peninsula. In the two-state system, the solidification of division and the nationalism that was visualized in the competition of systems in the DMZ led by North Korea and the UN, and the paradoxical meaning of armament that followed, and further, the task of the division system that was not overcome and the unfinished peace system due to the actual two-state system were revealed. Fourth, this article will examine the transition to the DMZ-centered unification discussion that was excluded in the process of pursuing the illusory peace agreement that was visualized in the division system. In the memory of the division and the meaning of the demilitarized zone that followed, it will be revealed that there are practical possibilities such as international cooperation and ecosystem conservation in the process of overcoming the tragedy of division filled with hostility and conflict and forming a peace system. Through this, this article will attempt to reveal the effectiveness of the DMZ and the possibility of reconciliation and cooperation.
