Abstract

This paper aims to closely analyze and elucidate the distinctive characteristics and the interrelationships of four forms of feminist subjectivity—critical, political, communicative (rhetorical), and ethical—as articulated in Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza’s critical feminist theology of liberation. Grounded in the premise that both the Bible and the world are embedded within patriarchal structures, Schüssler Fiorenza envisions that oppressed women can critically recognize their lived realities, reconstruct them, and forge paths toward liberation through ethical responsibility and communicative engagement with others. The critical feminist subjectivity refers to an active agency rooted in the emancipatory interest that transforms experiences of oppression into critical consciousness. It serves the function of ideology-critique by exposing and dismantling patriarchal ideologies, thereby offering an epistemological basis for reinterpreting and reconstructing distorted images and roles of women. The political feminist subjectivity embodies this critique in the public sphere, emphasizing the capacity for democratic dialogue and solidarity with subjects from diverse contexts of oppression within the ekklesia of wo/men-a communicative space of equals oriented toward well-being and peace for all people. The communicative subjectivity is grounded in intersubjective understanding, generating and sharing discourses through ordinary language in rhetoric. In particular, Schüssler Fiorenza articulates strategies of “rhetoricity of sciences” and “rhetoric as critical practice;” the former means understanding texts and biblical studies as rhetorical discourses shaped by specific interests and practical intentions, while the latter signifies that our inquiry and evaluation are also rhetorical. The ethical feminist subjectivity is a liberation-oriented, practical identity that challenges patriarchal oppression through responsible communication with the other and the formation of shared moral codes. Schüssler Fiorenza views the ekklesia of women as a living network of such ethical subjects, a democratic space where differences are respected and liberation is collectively pursued through communicative engagement. These four dimensions of feminist subjectivity are not discrete but organically interwoven. Schüssler Fiorenza's theology unfolds through the tension and harmony among them, offering a theology deeply engaged with lived realities. However, the integration of these subjectivities is theoretically ideal. It presents practical challenges, such as differences in epistemological strata in application, tensions between critical centrality and inclusivity of difference, and issues of boundary-making within the ekklesia of wo/men.
