Abstract

This study aims to elucidate more deeply the meaning of the dual unity that the Christian Eucharist aims for, that is, the unity between Christ and believers, believers and the community, neighbors and the world, and to propose ritual acts that embody this understanding. The effects of the Eucharist are expressed in terms such as the channel of grace, the presence of Christ, and the mystery of salvation, but the meaning behind them is related to elucidating human self-understanding and the fundamental order of life. The Eucharist is a ritual of unity, a ritual that allows believers to recognize that they are one body with Christ, the fundamental foundation of life, and to correct their relationships with others within that recognition. In a word, the Eucharist is a ritual of unity that repeatedly reenacts Christ's redemptive narrative through the ritual of bread and cup, thereby making us know ourselves and establishing redemptive relationships with others and the created world. From this perspective of dual unity, the traditional Eucharistic liturgy has a ritualistic task.In other words, although the Eucharistic liturgy prays for solidarity among believers and with their suffering neighbors in unity with Christ, the liturgical actions that embody the spirit of unity are poor. Above all, the “Prayers of the Faithful,” which are intercessory prayers for believers and the world that are traditionally located before and after the sermon, are based on the spirit of unity and solidarity, but are separated from the Eucharistic liturgy. In order to establish the identity of the Eucharist as a liturgy of unity, the church must reposition the Prayers of the Faithful within the Eucharistic liturgy. In addition, a holistic prayer method that can richly embody the spirit of unity should be sought. To this end, this study proposes “one body prayer” as a believer’s prayer so that the Eucharistic liturgy can practice the spirit of unity more specifically. The image of “one body” is an organic life image that contrasts with separation and alienation, dispersion and disconnection, exclusion and isolation, and withering and death. “one body prayer” is a communal prayer in which believers use their bodies together to practice the spirit of unity holistically. Finally, this study presents a basic plan for practicing one body prayer.
