Abstract
This study examines St. Augustine’s reorientation of classical rhetoric in De Doctrina Christiana and how St. Augustine transforms the very purpose and function of rhetoric by grounding it in Christian theology and pastoral responsibility. While classical rhetoric, especially in the works of Aristotle and Cicero, emphasized persuasion through logos, pathos, and ethos, St. Augustine redefines ethos as the preacher’s embodied moral and spiritual character, rather than a rhetorical appearance crafted for effect. Drawing on the Platonic-Isocratic tradition of idealistic ethos, St. Augustine insists that the truth of the Scripture must first shape the preacher’s life before shaping his speech. In Book IV of D.D.C., he adopts Cicero’s terminology of style and genera dicendi yet reverses Cicero’s hierarchy in which eloquence is subordinated to the three pastoral duties of teaching, delighting, and moving believers toward obedience. Thus, St. Augustine replaces the aesthetic climax of Cicero’s Orator with a theological decrescendo, centered on divine wisdom and the virtuous examples of the preacher. Even as St. Augustine appropriates classical categories, he restructures them to serve the aims of Christian proclamation. His work represents a decisive shift, from rhetoric being a tool of public persuasion, to being an instrument of scriptural truth and ecclesial formation.
