수사학, 커뮤니케이션, 그리고 기독교 설교의 상호적 이해와 적용

기독교 설교는 그 출발이 고대 수사학과 맥을 같이 함과 동시에, 현대에서는 커뮤니케이션의 이론과 방법론들을 채용하여 자신의 고유한 영역을 체계화하면서 발전하고있다. 기독교 설교론은 최초 성 어거스틴(St. Augustine, 354-430년)1)이 쓴『기독교교설』(De Doctrina Christiana )을 통해서 이론적 정립을 하게 되는데, 이것은 당시수사학자였던 어거스틴이 자신의 수사학적인 지식을 바탕으로 하여 작성한 저술이었다. 다시 말해 어거스틴은 기독교 설교 역사에서 최초로 고대 수사학의 이론과 방법론을 설교학 분야에 도입한 사람이었던 것이다. 어거스틴 이후 기독교의 설교는 자신의 독자적인 틀을 구축하면서 그 전통을 이어오게 되었고, 다시 현대에 들어서 등장한 커뮤니케이션학의 발전에 힘입어 또 한 번의새로운 변화를 경험하게 된다. 이런 역사적 과정은 오늘의 기독교 설교가 독자적인 학문으로서만이 아니라 수사학과 커뮤니케이션의 상호관계 속에서 이해되어야 할 중요한 이유라고 하겠다. 따라서 본 연구는 2,000년 역사 속에 변천을 거듭해온 기독교 설교를 오늘의 관점에서 수사학과 커뮤니케이션을 상호연관하여 이해하고, 이를 학문적으로 적용해보고자하는 시도에서 작성한 것이다. 그러나 수사학과 커뮤니케이션학의 분야 역시 지극히광대한 영역들이라서 여기서 이에 대한 자세한 내용들을 기술한다는 것은 불가능한작업이라 본다. 따라서 본 고에서는 각 영역의 기본적인 내용들을 중심으로 하여 언급하고자 한다. 차후에 수사학과 커뮤니케이션, 그리고 기독교 설교의 상호적 관계에 대한 학문적후속 연구들이 보다 심도 있게 진행될 수 있기를 기대하면서, 본 연구는 이에 대한하나의 문을 여는 데 그 의의를 두고자 한다.
Abstract
In the beginning Christian preaching started from the relationship with rhetoric, adopting the theory and methodology of ancient rhetoric. It is clear in the way that St. Augustine’s book, On Christian Doctrine(De Doctrina Christiana), which is regarded as the first book of Christian homiletics is based on rhetoric. Above all, Augustine himself was a rhetoric teacher before conversion. Therefore, it is certain that he would have put basis on rhetoric for his homiletical theory and methodology. Along with the fact, contemporary Christian preaching is using the theory and methodology of communication owing to its academic development. Since preaching is also a form of communication, studies on communication would be important for Christian preaching. Thus, the purpose of this article is to understand the mutual relationship among rhetoric, communication that contributed much to Christian preaching as neighboring studies and Christian preaching academically. However, it is impossible to mention all the vast range of rhetoric and communication. Therefore, this article would only cover the basics of rhetoric and communication and their relationship with Christian preaching.
