Abstract
The concept of "covenant" is the foundation of the relationship between God and men and the understanding of this concept is inextricably linked with the understanding of God. Covenant not only describes the way God relates to his people, but it also shows how the relationship develops throughout history through several prophets. This study compares the understanding of the Noah story and the concept of "covenant" in Christianity and Islam. Both religions share the narrative of God's judgment by a great flood and the salvation of Noah and his family through an ark. However, their theological interpretations differ significantly. In Christianity, the Noahic Covenant is a universal and unconditional promise from God to preserve creation, symbolized by the rainbow, and serves as a foundation for all subsequent redemptive covenants. It highlights God's grace and patience despite human sin. In contrast, the Quran's Noah narrative is primarily a didactic tool. The story emphasizes Noah's prophetic mission and serves as a powerful warning of divine judgment for those who reject a prophet's message. The Quran does not mention an explicit covenant with Noah or the rainbow. The universal covenant for all humanity is considered the "Primordial Covenant (Mithaq)," established at the beginning of creation. The detailed dialogue between Noah and his people in the Quran, which is absent in the biblical account, suggests a rhetorical purpose: to support the prophetic mission of Muhammad by drawing a parallel between the disbelievers of Noah's time and the disbelievers of Muhammad's time. This difference reveals how each tradition views the nature of God's relationship with humanity-Christianity emphasizing preservation and grace, while Islam highlights judgment and the central role of the prophet in delivering God 's message.
