이 연구는 한국의 초기선교역사에서 중요한 역할을 감당하였던 호레이스 언더우드의 사역을 선교학적으로 조명하면서, 그의 선교사역에 나타나는 총체적 선교를 분석하고, 나아가 그의 선교사역이 오늘날 21세기 펜데믹 시대의 한국교회의 선교를 위한 교훈을 찾고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 총체적 선교에 대한 선교 신학적 이해를 다룬 후, 호레이스 언더우드의 사역을 총체적 선교의 관점에서 분석하여, 언더우드에게서 나타나는 총체적 선교의 측면을 1) 의료사역과 복음전도의 총체성 2) 교육과 복음전도의 총체성 3) 인재 양성의 총체성 4) 문화와 종교이해의 총체성 5) 교회이해의 총체성으로 나타남을 밝혔다. 이 글은 언더우드가 보여준 총체성의 선교에 근거하여, 21세기의 새로운 상황 속에서 적용할 포괄적 총체성의 선교의 4가지를 제시했다. 첫째, 생태학적 실천을 포함하는 선교에로 전환, 둘째, 공감과 구체적인 환대를 실천하는 선교에로 전환, 셋째, 여성과 남성의 동반자적 협력의 선교에로 전환, 넷째로 일방적 선교에서 동반자적 우정의 선교에로 전환되어야함을 주장한다.
Abstract
This paper explores the integral ministry of American missionary Horace Grant Underwood, who was a major contributor in the establishment of early Korean churches. It furthermore explains how Underwood’s ideas and ministries can be applied to current Korean churches, which are experiencing dramatic changes due to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. Unlike his predecessors and contemporaries, Underwood has brought more integral understanding of mission. The paper examines his mission in five different areas: (1) the integration of medical work with evangelistic intention; (2) emphasis of educational work as a genuine missionary dimension; (3) the growing of leaders within the church as well as society; (4) a positive acknowledgement and integration of local culture and religion; and (5) the ecumenical understanding of the nature of the church. Using Underwood’s mission work as a base, the paper argues that Korean churches can expand its viewpoint of holistic mission. It argues the current Korean church must (1) embrace ecological work as mission; (2) exercise the often overlooked compassionate and empathetic work; (3) diversify its member by promoting gender equality; and (4) foster an friendship based mission over unilateral relationship.
