Abstract
John L. Nevius (1829-1893) was born on March 4, 1829 in Seneca County, New York. He decided to become a cross-cultural missionary when he attended the Communion Service at Princeton Theological Seminary. He married Helen S. Coan on June 15, 1853. John and his wife left Boston for Ningpo, China in September 19, 1853. They learned Chinese and John could preach with limited Chinese after a year. John visited many places to preach the Gospel, wrote many articles for new missionaries in China, and completed a brief Catechism. They moved from Ningpo to Chefoo, Santung. John continued to carry on an itinerary ministry for education, discipline, encouragement, and evangelism also in Santung. He invited church leaders to his house to let them have an advanced level of Bible Study. He made tracts for personal evangelism and discussed the importance of theological education and the methods of evangelism with other missionaries. As Everett N. Hunt pointed out, he and his wife lived as neither “natives” nor “stiff neck westerners.” John not only evangelized Chinese but also participated in social work to help people in need during critical times. In 1889, he was chosen as a speaker to tell his new mission method in the missionary conference in China. In 1890, he was invited by Presbyterian missionaries in Korea to share his new mission method with them. He died on October 19, 1893 at the age of 64. Nevius’ method was published in the Chinese Recorder. At last, his articles were published as a small book in 1885. He showed his new method in contrast to the old one. However, Calvin Mateer, a colleague who worked together in the same province severely criticized his new method. His new method is the missionary way in which new churches could continue to grow as an indigenous church through the “three selfs” principle: self-support, self-government, and self-propagation from the start while the old method let the new churches heavily depend upon the foreign resources. He was sure that his new mission method is biblical and practical on the mission fields. His method includes not only the “three selfs” principle but also systematic Bible study and discipline. John realized that the young churches could not grow without learning the word of God. In addition, he emphasized education based on the Manual and Catechism. He developed them for himself to help the new converts. John Nevius thought that the new converts should not become a “rice Christian” through his new method. However, his new method is not the only method which could be applicable everywhere in the mission field. His method was effective in Korea, especially in the northwestern area while the method was not effective as much as he expected in China. His new method produced strong independent churches in Korea and helped them grow in terms of an indigenous church. John Nevius’ method, based on the “three selfs” principle, was developed into the “four selfs” principle, the “six selfs” principle, and the “seven selfs” principle. In conclusion, his new mission method can be summarized as a catalyst to enhance planting and growing an indigenous church. As a result, his new method can be still applicable in many various mission fields all over the world until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.
