아프리카는 2022년 현재 13억 7천 만 명이 넘는 사람들의 고향이며, 2000가지 언어를 사용하는 다양한 종족들이 모자이크처럼 분포되어 살고 있는 방대한 대륙이다. 또한 아프리카에 인류가 정착해 살기 시작한 때부터 그곳의 생태환경에 맞추어 수 십 세기에 걸친 종족들의 이주와 정착을 반복하는 과정을 통해서 현재의 분포를 이루었다. 그런 역사와 환경의 적응과정에서 아프리카 사람들은 종족과 언어의 다양성과 더불어 각자의 신앙체계와 관습에 따라 다른 곳과는 구별되는 고유한 종교적인 시스템을 유지하고 있다. 그러므로 아프리카 전체를 일반화된 몇 개의 특성으로 분류하는 것은 현실적이지 못한 관념적 접근에 그칠 가능성이 크다. 그럼에도 불구하고 아프리카인의 종교적인 특성을 대체적으로 현실에 가깝게 가늠할 수 있는 것은 그들의 소통방식에서 발견할 수 있다. 아프리카인들의 종교적 특성을 이해하기 위한 가장 좋은 연구 방법 중의 하나는 구전형태로 전해져 내려오는 그들의 종교적인 표현들을 심층적으로 탐구하는 것일 것이다. 본고에서는 구전형태의 아프리카 격언(proverbs)1을 분석하여 그 안에 담겨진 아프리카인들의 종교적인 특성을 분석하고 아프리카 격언의 선교적 활용이 아프리카 선교에 미치는 영향을 파악하는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 먼저 아프리카에서 사역한 선교사들이나 학자들이 수집한 격언들을 일차자료로 하여 아프리카인들의 전통적인 격언의 종교적 기능과 기독교와의 상관성을 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 아프리카인들이 기독교의 복음을 받아들임으로 인해 발생한 그들의 전통적인 종교관의 변화를 연구하고자 한다. 이를 바탕으로 필자는 본 연구를 통해서 발견되는 아프리카 격언의 선교적인 함의를 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
Africa is home to more than 1.37 billion people as of 2022 and is a vast continent with a mosaic of diverse ethnic groups speaking more than 2000 indigenous languages. In addition, the present distribution has been achieved through the process of repeating the migration and settlement of tribes over the course of several tens of centuries under the region's ecological environment from the time when human beings began to settle and live in Africa. In adapting to such a history and background, African people maintain their religious system distinct from other places according to their belief systems and customs, as well as ethnic and linguistic diversity. For this reason, classifying the whole of Africa into a few generalized characteristics is highly likely to be an unrealistic ideological approach. Nevertheless, one of the best research methods to understand the religious characteristics of Africans would be to delve deeply into their religious expressions handed down orally. This paper aims to analyze the African proverbs in oral form, determine the religious characteristics of Africans therein, and understand the impact of the missional use of African proverbs on African missions. I will examine the proverbs collected by missionaries and scholars who worked in Africa as primary sources. Then I will further explore the religiosity and function of Africans' traditional proverbs. I will also analyze the changes after Africans accepted Christianity that affected their traditional view of religion. Based on this, I will suggest the mission implications of African proverbs found in this research.
