Abstract
Rosetta Sherwood Hall secured a missionary base for Kore an women through the women’s hospital and medical mission ary work, leaving behind great contributions in the subsequent development of missionary work and in nurturing excellent modern female leaders in each field. Rosetta believes that es tablishing many women’s hospitals to expand medical services for women and children is truly an advanced Christian idea, and that hospitals for women and children, who are the most ignored and neglected, are more in line with Christian ideals. Hall’s ideals and the dedication and sacrifice that followed them had a profound impact and benefit to Korean women and children during the late Chosun Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. In particular, it provided an opportunity for women, who were easily excluded from the medical benefits of West ern medicine due to the male-dominant ideology or internal and external legal practices at the time, to encounter Christian faith, Western medicine, and Western culture, and in this pro cess, it served as a base and bastion for women’s missionary work. It fulfilled its role well. Rosetta Hall produced many early medical practitioners, including Esther Pak, the first Korean Western medicine doc tor, and contributed greatly to the establishment of many medical institutions. Baldwin Clinic, which she established in Dongdaemun for the poor, has developed into today’s Ewha Womans University hospital, and Gihol Hospital, established in memory of her husband William Hall, has expanded into Pyongyang United Christian Hospital, Gwanghye Women’s Hospital in Pyongyang, and Women’s Hospital in Incheon, and the Gyeongseong Women’s Medical Training Center, which was established to produce female medical professionals, has established itself as today’s Korea University Medical School. Rosetta Hall, who realized the importance of education while attending teacher training school, was active in the field of education and left behind many achievements. He established Korea’s first school for the blind next to Gwanghye Yeowon, which was established to treat women in Pyongyang, and created Braille books to educate blind girls. After the blind school was established, a school for the deaf was established, laying the foundation for special education in our country. There is no disagreement in the Korean special education community about the fact that Rosetta Hall was the pioneer who started Korea’s first modern special education. As mentioned above, in 1894, Rosetta Hall developed the use of Braille and began Korea’s first education for the visually impaired, and in 1909, it expanded to education for the hearing impaired as well. In that respect, it can be said that “the educational institution for the visually impaired operated by Rosetta Hall was the cradle of modern special education in Korea.” Rosetta Hall, which practiced love for women and children in Pyongyang for a long time, was also called “Omani(Mother) of Pyongyang.” He was compared to Lincoln, who liberated the slaves by liberating the women of Chosun. Furthermore, Mrs. Rosetta Sherwood Hall is a person who must be studied in un derstanding Korea’s modern and contemporary history. From the history of Korean Christianity and missionaries, to women’s history, to the history of education, and to the history of medicine, there is no place that has not been influenced by her. It can be said to be groundbreaking and very difficult to find.
